FIBER X Simulacrum: ‘Practicing Exposure’ Launch

Arts and culture magazine Simulacrum and FIBER Festival collaborated on ‘Practicing Exposure’, a publication that explores different ways of relating to an environment increasingly characterized by environmental collapse. We invite you to the launch event (free event) at Tolhuistuin, for an evening of artist talks and readings from the magazine.

In times of ecological crises, the futile attempt to take shelter from the environment runs up to its limits. The strange agencies of the Anthropocene that cannot be bracketed by human control, create an increasing sense of exposure between beings and environment. Now more than ever, it is important to change our ways of thinking about the relation between culture and nature. How can we come to a more complex understanding of the interplay between beings and environment?

This evening celebrates the launch of ‘Practicing Exposure’, which includes nine entries and an interview with professor Stacy Alaimo on her work and book Exposed. With the publication as a starting point, the program sees artists, researchers and designers explore the complexities and intimacies part of an increasingly unsettling relation between beings and environment.

ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS

► Leanne Wijnsma (NL) received a BA in Graphic Design from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2009 and a Masters in Visual Strategies from the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam in 2013. She leads the research group ‘control society’ investigating data mining by smartphone apps and gadgets as part of Dutch media-lab SETUP in 2014 and has received an e-culture grant from the Dutch Cultural Media Fund to research and develop the Smell of Data in collaboration with filmmaker Froukje Tan. She teaches Communication & Design Ethics at Utrecht University. She has been a Future Emerging Art and Technology associate (2016) and has been nominated for a Bio Art and Design Award (2014).

► Theun Karelse (NL) studied fine-arts at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam before joining FoAM, a transdisciplinary laboratory at the interstices of art, science, nature and everyday life. His interests and experimental practice explore edges between art, environment, technology and archaeology. Lately he has been creating research programmes that consist of fieldwork as a means of critical reflection. For this diverse teams are established to address specific topics in specific locations by in-situ prototyping, experimentation and direct perception.

► Floating Platform (NL) is a collective, started by Joana Velu, Mathild Clerc-Verhoeven, Pepijn Meurs and Rots Brouwer, that researches the connection between water and social issues, such as mobility, migration and climate. The main aim of the platform is to let these different topics flow into each other and explore how they intersect. The platform is a physical and virtual space, meaning a literal floating surface made from recycled material and an online website where we collect our findings. They want to invite people that have different relations with and perspectives on water, to have a conversation with them.

► Simulacrum is an arts and culture magazine, based in Amsterdam, that provides a publication platform for students, researchers and artists. ‘Practising Exposure’ is the first edition of this academic year of Simulacrum Magazine and connects to FIBER’s ongoing Cartographies of the Vanishing Now project, which is leading up to the FIBER Festival (May 2020).
