To mark the launch of our third issue of Simulacrum this year on STIL (TE)  // STILL (NESS) we present to you a silent online symposium.

Here you will find 14 contributions – of art historians, cultural theorists, philosophers, musicians, artists – some of whose texts are also featured in the magazine. They present diverging approaches to the elusive question of silence and stillness: how they frame our discourses, our possibilities, our sounds, and our times.

Because in all the ways we frantically try to manage ourselves, each other and our time, silence might be just waiting for us to stop talking:

‘what a relief to have nothing to say, the right to say nothing, because only then is there a chance of framing the rare, and even rarer, thing that might be worth saying.’

Gilles Deleuze, Negotiations (New York: Columbia University Press, 1995), 129.

We would like to sincerely thank the Amsterdams Universiteitsfonds and Stichting Toekenningen for their generous funding which made this symposium possible. We would also like to extend our gratitude to BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, for providing such a welcoming recording space. Additionally, we are very grateful for the unexpected and interesting avenues of thinking opened up by our writers, authors, and speakers. And lastly, we would like to thank you, our readers and listeners, for staying with us this year, in or out of silence.
