Spectrum: Fetisj
Join us on the 19th of February from 19:30 till 23:00 in Kriterion for the launch of Fetisj, the latest issue of arts and culture magazine Simulacrum. To celebrate the launch of the issue, Simulacrum and Kriterion will host a screening of multiple short films and an exhibition related to the theme.
With Fetisj, Simulacrum has sought to research and portray different interpretations and ways of understanding fetishism, as the experience of fetishism is one that transcends clear definitions. Rather, it is a multifaceted concept that can play different roles and take on different meanings, depending on the context in which it occurs. The different contexts, connotations, and concepts within which the term fetish emerges, are either seamlessly merging into each other or diametrically opposing each other. Because of the versatile and fragmented use and understanding of the term, thinking with and about fetish is an exciting exercise.
This has resulted in an issue that seeks to portray different kinds of fetishism in all its forms: on the experience of asphyxiation, the fetishisation of cuteness, puppy play, a fetish for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the beauty of mathematical objects, and more. These experiences are then paired with theoretical ways of understanding fetishism in their relative contexts. Turned on by this? Of course there will be a chance to buy the magazine at the launch.
In line with the issue, the exhibition and the short films selected for the launch aim to portray the versatility of fetishism, showing their is no clear cut definition to this concept that defines itself rather as a mode of experience than theory.
The exhibition includes artworks by Toto Stoffels, Elliyah Dyson, Lucky Versloot, and Ronja van Heijningen. The exhibition will be on view from January 31st – March 4th in the Kriterion Café.
